BIRD IS THE WORD

In 1969, the Bluebirds came out on top at Ashton Gate, with both goals in the 2-0 win coming from men who made over a hundred appearances during their time at Ninian Park.

The first came through Brian Clark. Having started with the Robins, and making 195 appearances for them in the process, the striker returned to Bristol and tormented them. The second goal came through Ronnie Bird’s penalty. A winger by trade, Bird appeared 107 times for the Bluebirds in five years at the Club.

RAINING GOALS

A derby win is always glorious, but when you win in such a convincing manner, it gives you that extra bit of satisfaction. Rewind back to 2010, the Bluebirds ran riot in Bristol, defeating Gary Johnson’s men 6-0.

All of City’s star players got themselves on the scoresheet at Ashton Gate. There were braces for both Ross McCormack and Michael Chopra, while the talismanic Peter Whittingham got in on the act with a cool finish. Liam Fontaine scored an own goal in City’s biggest ever Ashton Gate triumph.

PILKINGTON STRIKES LATE

Of course, you can win derbies convincingly, but sometimes, a late show tastes just as sweet. In January 2017 a scrappy game threatened to have gone either way. After Anthony Pilkington had pulled the game back to 1-1, Tammy Abraham put the Robins back in the lead.

The Bluebirds had an ace up their sleeve to seal a dramatic comeback win. Kadeem Harris headed in from close-range to draw level again, before Pilkington sealed the points with a brilliant strike from 25-yards out. A true derby day memory.

NG IN GOAL

A derby can produce memorable moments that people will talk about for years to come. After a goalless first half, Sory Kaba brought Cardiff City Stadium to life, as he nodded home from close-range. 20 minutes later and the lead had doubled, as the mercurial Jaden Philogene jinked past defenders and unleashed a fierce effort into the near corner.

But the game would be remembered for the events of stoppage time, as goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was sent off. After all subs had been made, the gloves were given to Perry Ng, and the full-back ensured the Bluebirds kept a clean sheet in a huge derby win.
