Tom Cleverley
OPPOSITION FOCUS | IN THE DUGOUT

Watford’s manager is Tom Cleverley, who was appointed on a permanent basis in April this year. 

Cleverley had an illustrious playing career representing the likes of Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and Watford. He also made a number of appearances for the England national team and Great Britain at the 2012 Olympic Games. 

He initially became manager of Watford U18s in July 2023, having been forced to retire due to injury. Following the departure of First Team boss Valérien Ismaël in March 2024, Cleverley was named as interim head coach. 

Having impressed in the role, only losing once in his first seven matches, he was named head coach on a permanent basis. 

Since taking charge, Cleverley is the only manager in England’s top four divisions to be unbeaten at home.

OPPOSITION FOCUS | SEASON SO FAR

The hosts head into this weekend’s fixture sat in sixth place in the Sky Bet Championship. 

They have impressed at home this season having gone unbeaten at Vicarage Road this campaign picking up 29 points out of a possible 33. 

Last time, the Hornets claimed a 2-1 victory over Portsmouth in dramatic fashion to extend their impressive run at home.

Despite falling behind to Zak Swanson's strike, second half goals from Edo Kayembe and Rocco Vata secured all three points for the home side, with the latter's goal coming in the 95th minute.

The Bluebirds visited Vicarage Road in April 2023, where an early goal from Ismaila Sarr gave the hosts the lead. 

City fought back from behind admirably, with two goals from Kion Etete and Cedric Kipré in the space of three minutes putting the Bluebirds in front. 

Just before half time, a stunning overhead kick from Sory Kaba helped to secure all three points for City, which went on to be named the Club's Goal of the Season that year.

CLUB CONNECTIONS | BLUEBIRDS AND HORNETS

A number of players have represented both City and the Hornets throughout their playing careers. Former Wales boss Rob Page made over 200 league appearances for the Hornets winning the Second Division and First Division Play-Off. He had a brief spell in the Welsh capital making nine appearances in the 2004-05 season. 

Heiðar Helguson made 203 appearances for the Hornets, scoring 66 goals over two spells in Hertfordshire. The Icelandic forward made the move to the Bluebirds ahead of the 2012-13 season, playing a key role in the promotion winning side netting eight league goals. 

A more recent name, Leandro Bacuna made 109 appearances in the Welsh capital. He was released following the expiration of his contract at the end of the 2021/22 season and was picked up as a free agent by the Hornets in December 2022. He played 14 times for Watford during the 2022/23 season. 

Current Bluebirds boss Omer Riza spent time at the Hornets before joining City. He started as a youth team coach before becoming Assistant First Team Coach at Vicarage Road during the 2023-24 campaign.
