Callum O'Dowda

O'Dowda pre-Burnley | We want to make a real impact

Interviews
Ahead of Cardiff City's return to Sky Bet Championship action at Turf Moor this weekend, Callum O'Dowda spoke to the press at CCS.

Callum began by addressing Saturday's opponents, who will host City having won their opening match of the season with a convincing 4-1 victory over Luton Town.

“I watched Burnley’s last league game, and it’s a tough place to go," he said. "When I first came to the Championship they went up to the Premier League that year, so I’d say that they’ve established themselves as a high-end Championship or Premier League club.

“When you look at their resources and their squad, they have got a lot of quality, but I’d also say for ourselves that we’ve really showed intent in this summer transfer window, and kept players that I’d say can make a real difference for us this season.

“I think it will be a really good game, and we need to stop them and make a real impact - from a clinical point of view – and get some goals."

Continuing, Callum shared his thoughts on the new additions to the team, and the impact that he hopes they will have as City look for their first victory of the new league campaign.

“You’ve seen teams in the past who keep the ball but don’t do anything with it in terms of goals scored and creating opportunities," he elaborated. "If you look at the front three we’ve signed recently – Wilfried Kanga, Anwar El Ghazi and Chris Willock – there are goals already in them as players, as well as those already in the squad who have goals scored at this level.

“It will take time, but it’s a joy to play in games and even to be involved in training, and that’s whether we’re playing out from the back, during the mid-phase or into the final third."

Having mentioned the Club's new personnel in the squad, Callum concluded by discussing his developing partnership on the left with summer signing Chris Willock.

“With the ball at his feet, you can’t get a hold of him," Callum explained. "He’s probably one of the best I’ve seen, I’d say.

"We’re getting used to playing with each other; there are times where I’ll want to overlap him but others where I’ll know myself as a winger that you don’t want to drag people over and do it yourself.

"It’s about learning and playing with him, but he brings a lot of quality to the side.”
