We continue Youth Development Week by reflecting on the positive progress made by U21 centre-back Dylan Lawlor this season.
The defender has impressed for Matthew Bloxham’s side and has also made his First Team debut, coming in the Emirates FA Cup against Aston Villa.
“It’s been really positive,” Dylan began. “I had a bit of experience around the First Team last season and going into this year I just wanted to build on that. It’s been a season that hasn’t really been hampered by injury, especially the second half of the campaign, so I’m hoping to carry on now and try and get a few more appearances.
“Making your debut is what you work for and what you dream of. When that opportunity comes, it’s all about taking it and relishing it. I feel like I did that. I saw my family before the game and they were nearly in tears; it was a proud moment for us and that’s all you work for. It all pays off when they see you playing on your debut.
“You think back to your time at the Academy because that’s where it all starts, all those hours of travelling after school, not just me but my family as well. It all pays off.”

Dylan joined the Academy at the age of 7 during the pre-Academy years. Hailing from Caerphilly, this season’s progress marks his journey through the age groups, with a high number of staff contributing to his development.
He continued: “I definitely feel that gratitude, 100%. I don’t think I could have gotten to where I am or be the player I am without the support of the Academy staff. All the hours that they give, the information that they pass on, it’s all helped me on my journey so it’s all credit to them.
“It’s been a positive year for the Academy. You can see the pathway there and it’s opened up to everyone. I hope that inspires the players we have that it is possible to break through.”
The centre-back is one of many First Team debutants over the last 12 months, including the likes of Cody Twose, Luey Giles and Isaac Jefferies, who all joined the Academy before the age of 10 and have been alongside Dylan throughout his journey.
“Those players are lads that I’ve played with nearly all my life," Dylan added. "They are some of my closest friends from our days starting at U8 level together. It’s really nice to have these opportunities and to share those experiences with them.”
