MATCH SUMMARY

City’s U21 side were held to a 1-1 draw to Colchester United on Saturday afternoon.

Adeteye Gbadehan opened the scoring for the Bluebirds shortly before half time, before an equaliser from Leo Makatta just before full-time ensured the points were shared.

The opening exchanges were limited in terms of chances, however City keeper Ewan Griffiths remained sharp to deny Colchester the opening goal with an impressive double save. The first real chance for City came from a set piece, following Dakarai Mafico winning the ball in the U’s half, before being brought down. Will Spiers stepped up to take and came close, however his effort just went over the bar. Luey Giles also went close from a free-kick, but his shot narrowly whipped past the post.

Seconds before the break, Luke Pearce won the ball deep into the Colchester half, then displaying some fast feet to beat his defender and get his shot away, which was saved by the feet of the keeper, and with the U’s failing to clear the ball, it fell to Gbadehan to dispatch.

The young Bluebirds kept searching for the second throughout the half, creating plenty of chances. Most notably, Tanatswa Nyakuhwa picked up the ball on the left wing, beat his man but couldn’t quite find the target. The visitors levelled through Makatta, who ensured the points were even at Leckwith.

Matthew Bloxham
PRE-MATCH | MATTHEW BLOXHAM

Ahead of the fixture, Matthew Bloxham said: We know Colchester like to play an open and expansive game, both in and out of possession. We expect them to try and cause us problems, so we have to make sure that we defend properly and with an intensity. When we have the ball, we want to utilise it, find good pockets of space to create overloads and apply the finishing touch.

"This is our sixth game in about 19 days, so the boys over the last few weeks have had a physically demanding experience, but for large parts of that period, the boys have produced good performances. We hope that we can finish off this period with another positive performance that leads to three points."
