PRE-MATCH | TOM HUTTON
U18 manager Tom Hutton said before Saturday’s game: “We were really positive about our performance against Colchester. We were very dominant, and we ticked a lot of boxes in terms of the way we wanted to play. There are some moments I thought we could have managed more effectively, but with such a young group finishing the game, it was a good day for the U18s but also for the academy as a whole.
“I’ve known some of the newer boys for a long time with my previous roles in the academy. I’ve got a good understanding of where they are in their development and what their strengths are and what they will bring to the group. Playing in an older age group is an important part of how we try to develop players. Setting challenges to those younger players is massively important to us, and we’re always looking to stretch the lads when we can, and the games programme is an important tool for us to do that.
“We had a really good game against Brentford earlier in the season. They posed challenges to us that were subtly done, and they are one of the few teams who have done that against us this season. However, I thought we dealt with their challenges really well and I do think we were the slightly better team on the day, but it was a very tight game. Brentford are a good team, but I think they have a very consistent way of playing. We will be working with a slightly different group too compared to the first game, so we will have to prepare them well, and if we’re able to play the way we want to play, I’m sure we’ll come away with another positive result.”
