Cardiff City FC and Compass Cymru Champion Sustainability with Green Football Weekend Initiatives…
Cardiff City Football Club, in partnership with Compass Cymru, is proud to continue a series of sustainability initiatives in support of Green Football Weekend, which will be celebrated during the match against Sheffield Wednesday this weekend.
These efforts highlight the shared ambitions of Cardiff City FC and Compass Cymru to environmental responsibility and align with the growing movement within football to reduce its carbon footprint.

We’re inviting fans to participate in Green Football Weekend by enjoying delicious plant-based promotions on game day and score green goals for Cardiff City FC as part of Green Football’s Great Save campaign!
Fans can grab a Buffalo Plant-Based Fillet Burger, also available as part of the kid's meal deal, at selected kiosks in the stadium. This initiative encourages fans to explore sustainable food choices and reduce their environmental impact. The hospitality menu also features a range of plant-forward options for guests including a Wild Mushroom & Aubergine Pate starter; Beetroot & Thyme Risotto main and plant-based desserts.
Compass Cymru continues to prioritise the use of comprehensive Welsh suppliers throughout the stadium, supporting local businesses and minimising transportation emissions. This not only includes food and drink suppliers, but at the start of the ‘24/25 season Notpla’s innovative seaweed-based food packaging was introduced which will see over 750,000 single-use plastic packaging items replaced across Welsh stadiums.
Another key highlight of Cardiff City FC’s sustainability efforts is its partnership with Grounds For Good (GFG), a Penarth-based business dedicated to diverting waste coffee grounds from landfills and transforming them into innovative, circular products for retail. A portion of the sales profits supports Welsh homelessness charities.
In addition, Cardiff City FC is actively promoting sustainability with a Boots for Bluebirds scheme encouraging fans to donate their old football boots, which are then recycled or redistributed to those in need, reducing waste and promoting access to sports. The Club’s Foundation also provides schools with valuable resources from the Premier League Primary Stars Protect the Planet initiative, educating young people about environmental issues and inspiring them to act.
Compass Cymru Managing Director, Jane Byrd said: “We are delighted to partner with Cardiff City FC in supporting Green Football Weekend and the Great Save campaign. These initiatives, especially the promotion of our plant-based options and our partnerships with Notpla and Grounds For Good, showcase our shared commitment to sustainability and demonstrate how football can play a vital role in promoting positive environmental change.”
Cardiff City FC and Compass Cymru are proud to be a part of the Green Football Weekend movement and will continue to explore and implement sustainable practices throughout its operations.
Lee Southernwood, Head of Football Operations at Cardiff City FC: commented: “We are delighted to join the football community in supporting the Great Save this year.
“The initiatives that we have showcased as part of the campaign this week, including signing the Sustainable Travel Charter, partnering with KitAid and our Boots for Bluebirds campaign demonstrate how our Club is becoming greener and committing to sustainable practices.
“Our commitment to reducing our environmental impact will be highlighted further when several green energy solutions, such as solar PV and lighting controls and EV charging systems, will be installed as part of the development of our new training centre in Hensol.
“We encourage City fans to get involved and score green goals by passing on, selling, or reusing old kit and pledging to take climate friendly actions.”
Gavin Hawkey, Foundation Director at Cardiff City Community Foundation, added: “We’re committed to contributing to the effort to combat climate change and to making environmental sustainability central to our ways of working and decision making.
“We’re using our position in the community to influence and educate others about environmental sustainability.”
