Rubin Colwill

Rubin on improvement, hard work, confidence and blonde hair

Interviews
Rubin Colwill spoke to the media after Cardiff City’s 2-0 win in the Carabao Cup over Bristol Rovers.

“The first half was difficult,” Rubin began. “They’re a good League One side who I think will be up there this season. They’re well organised, and you could see that in the way they pressed in the first half with the way they were aggressive. Us lads probably haven’t played much together before, so it did take us a while to get used to each other and gel a bit.

“In the second half we were better and understood where we were going to be in terms of making runs off each other and linking up. It just took that little bit of time to settle into the game together, but we got the win in the end.”

This will be Colwill’s fourth season with the First Team, and the attacking midfielder is looking to improve year on year. The Welsh international hopes to improve once again this season and take his game to new heights.

“When you come on sometimes for 20 minutes, you want to come on and give 100% and change the game,” Rubin continued. “Sometimes I am guilty of giving too much and maybe trying too hard, but that’s something I’ll learn with experience and having confidence in myself, that I don’t need to do too much and just settle into the game and let it come to me. I’ve been a lot better at that over the last year for sure.

“I want every season to be my breakout season and that I go out and get 20 goals and 20 assists, but I want to work on myself and be the best I can be and have that confidence that things will work out. When the time is right the time’s right and I’ll start every game and be scoring every week, but that’s got to come with improvement and working hard, and I have to get myself into the best place with football.”

However, one of the biggest changes Colwill has made over the summer has been to his hair, and the Bluebird explained why he made the decision.

“I just wanted a change really!” Rubin concluded. “I’ve had the same haircut for ages, and I never really get it cut it, so I wanted to change it and try something different. It took me about three times with the bleach to get there, but I fancied the change.

“I remember having hair like Aaron’s [Ramsey] in school when he did it, so playing with him now is a little weird!”
