Robertson post-Southampton | I want to kick on
Alex Robertson spoke to the press after the Bluebirds’ valiant performance in narrow defeat to Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
“They had quite a bit of possession in the first half, but we stayed in the game well," Alex began. "In the second half, we just went right at it and we tried to come away with the result. But, they scored a great fourth goal in the 90th minute, then the game is done when that fifth one goes in.
"The boys played really well; I was happy to come on, contribute with a goal and get more minutes in my legs.”
The City midfielder suffered an unfortunate injury on New Year’s Day of 2024, while playing for Portsmouth, which ruled him out for the rest of last season.
Having returned at the start of this campaign, Alex reflected on his time on the sidelines.
“I’ve been out for a long time before this and I’ve only played in the games against Bristol Rovers and Swansea CIty before today, but I want to get as many minutes into my legs as possible and I hope I keep on doing so.
“I was on loan at Portsmouth, but got a nasty injury in January. It was tough mentally more than anything else, because I was doing well, and then to have that playing time and your normal life just taken away from you is tough.
"The surgery on top of that too was difficult, because all I could do for a month was sit at home and recover. I believe everything happens for a reason, and I think that injury happened in order to make me stronger, and now I want to kick on.”
City return to league action on Saturday, welcoming Middlesbrough to Cardiff City Stadium.
Alex concluded: “The first two games against Sunderland and Burnley were tough, but we actually didn’t play badly, especially in the first halves of both those games.
"We were playing good football, but it’s just the way the game goes. They can score a goal or two in quick succession, but we have to bounce back from that. The derby on Sunday was good. For us to stay in the game and come back to draw is positive."
