Riza pre-Sheffield Wednesday | Refreshed after the break

Omer Riza
Omer Riza spoke to the press ahead of our clash with Sheffield Wednesday at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The fixture will be our first since returning from the international break, as the Owls travel to the Welsh capital.

“The international break is always one of disjointedness with players going off and some players taking the opportunity to rest because they’ve played a lot of games," Omer began. "We still managed to have some good days of training and we played a friendly last week. The boys have come back in refreshed and we’re ready to go.

“It’s been a really good week. Monday and Tuesday were very high in intensity and we got to practise what we needed to work on with good morale and energy. We trained well today and will do so again tomorrow before Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Perry Ng has come back in now. David Turnbull, Alex Robertson, Will Alves and Ollie Tanner are training. Andy Rinomhota hasn’t come back in yet from international duty.

Callum O’Dowda felt a bit of tightness so it was better that he didn’t go because of the risk there. He’s doing well and is fit for Saturday. Tanner has been in non-contact for a few sessions but was in contact today. He’ll be in contention to be in the squad.

Anwar El Ghazi has been ill, he’s got over that now and is training well. We have a couple of knocks to Chris Willock and Callum Robinson, they potentially won’t be available, but other than that, everyone is back."

Our opponents on Saturday currently sit 12th in the Sky Bet Championship table, with the reverse fixture ending in a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.

Omer continued: They’re a good side. They’ve got some attacking threats, they’ve got a good structure and good concepts in their game, in possession and out of possession in respect of pressing and controlling the game at times in possession. It’ll be an interesting game.

We’re looking forward to it, a home game and hopefully we’ll have a good crowd behind the boys. We’re expecting a good game.

Omer Riza and Calum Chambers

The Bluebirds have a busy period of fixtures coming up, with away fixtures at Queens Park Rangers and Preston North End to follow Saturday's clash.

Omer concluded: "We put a lot of emphasis and a lot of pressure on the games that we need to win, like Luton and Oxford, where we’ve let ourselves down, but we’ve got the quality to go and win games like against Blackburn.

"Middlesbrough away, we drew. We beat Watford away 2-1. We’ve picked up points in games that people would have probably said we aren’t going to pick points up. It’s disappointing on one hand that we’re losing these games that we’ve lost but on the other hand, we’re showing the character, application and desire to go and get the points away from home like at Blackburn.

"It was a good result, it keeps us where we are and we’ve already said we had nine finals, that's one down and we’ve got eight to go."
