Riza post-Hull City | We were really fantastic defensively

Omer Riza
Omer Riza spoke with the press following the Bluebirds' 1-0 victory against Hull City at Cardiff City Stadium.

“We've done a great job,” Omer began. “We've kept a clean sheet and we were really fantastic defensively.

“I’m relieved; we needed it. I think we knew that, the players knew that, the staff knew that. We've come close on a few occasions and not managed to do it against teams around us.

“I think we did what we needed to do and that's important as well. It shows that resilience, that togetherness. We've just got to keep maintaining a self-belief, work ethic, principles, values and all of those things.

“Three points against Hull gives us that six-point gap at the minute. It wasn’t pretty but three points is three points. We're just happy to grind out a result and an important win.”

With Callum Robinson and Yousef Salech both starting this evening's fixture, Omer he reflected on their pleasing performances at CCS.

“I needed goals and they both can do that.” he continued. “So that's what's important, and we got the goal from that. That's pleasing moving forwards.

“It could happen again; of course we've got good options now, good variation, so we'll just change it up depending on the opposition we play against.

“We wanted to be structured, we wanted to be disciplined and I played Yousef and Robbo today because I wanted a goal. I knew we needed a goal and it came through them and Chrissy [Chris Willock] combining, so I think that was pleasing.”

Omer made six changes to the starting XI that drew with Plymouth Argyle last weekend, with some forced switches due to injury.

Jak [Alnwick] has had a tear in his hamstring." he explained. “It’s a shame for him, a shame for us, because he's been excellent this year, but Ethan [Horvath] also has got a lot of experience and he's been waiting patiently, so it's an opportunity for him.

“Will Alves took a whack on his knee against Plymouth; it swelled up so we’re managing that, hopefully that's not too serious.

Joe Ralls pulled his calf before the Plymouth game, hence why we couldn't get him on and why Rambo [Aaron Ramsey] had to play 100 minutes. It's just one of those things where he came back and it had gone, so that was disappointing.”
