Mick post-Rotherham | Delighted with the performance
ROTHERHAM REACTION | MICK
Mick McCarthy spoke to the press after the Bluebirds secured a battling 2-1 win over Rotherham United on Tuesday evening.
“It was hard work.” Mick began. “The conditions weren’t great, and we’ve had to fight fire with fire, with free-kicks, corners and throw-ins. It was that kind of game, and I think the lads handled it really well.
“We were disappointed with the goal that we conceded, and I think we could have done better to defend it. But the two goals that we got were very good ones. I’m really delighted with the performance.”
Securing a second consecutive victory, the boss was full of praise for his players’ determined display, whilst also applauding two well-taken goals from Sheyi Ojo and Joe Bennett. He added: “We’ve shown a bit of quality today, but in this league, you’re not allowed to show that quality unless you win the scrap first.
“I think we’ve had to show that fighting spirit. If we deal with all the things that we’ve had to deal with – all the free kicks, all the balls in our box, all the crosses, all the throws – we’ve got quality then. There will be a little period in the game that we can utilise, and that is what’s happened.
“For his goal, Sheyi was as cool as a cucumber! It was a lovely finish, and he is a very good player. He’s playing up front with Kieffer, he’s got great ability and he’s quick, as well.
“That wing-back position suits Joe Bennett; he’s very good at it. He’s got the energy to get up and down, and it was great to see him in the box scoring the winner.”
The boss also provided updates on the absent Alex Smithies and on Joe Ralls, who was substituted due to injury, with additional compliments for both Dillon Phillips and Marlon Pack.
“I’ve exchanged messages with Alex. He said he’s okay and feeling a lot better, but wasn’t quite well enough for today.
“Dillon was excellent tonight. He came under a lot of pressure, but came and punched a couple when he had to. I was pleased with his performance.
“Joe Ralls has got some ice on his ankle, and we just hope it’s not too bad. I gave Marlon Pack a real pat on the back. He’s not been in my starting line-up yet, but he’s trained brilliantly, and, when he was needed, he came on today and did a great job. I love that from my players.”
