Méïté post-Blackburn Rovers | Quality and fighting mentality

Cardiff City players
Yakou Méïté spoke to Cardiff City TV after scoring the winner in City's 2-1 away victory over Blackburn Rovers.

"Everyone is happy." Yak began. "I was happy with the performance of the team. We had a big fight from start to finish, and I'm really happy to score at the end there, that it could give us three points.

"We had a lot of conversations with the team, especially this week, about how we can get out of this. I've been there myself, I've got that experience to try and help some young players who have got really good quality, but never been in that fight. I'm here to show my experience, and I want to score goals.

"If I can start scoring at the end of games, I will take it. The feeling was really good, especially because I haven't scored a lot this season, so it was special. I've scored a lot of goals with my head, so I've really missed the feeling. As soon as I saw the cross, I knew that the defender didn't know that I was behind him."

Yakou's header was his second strike of the season, having also found the net in a 2-2 draw away at Coventry City earlier in the campaign.

He continued: "It's been difficult. I haven't played much in the past few games. Sometimes you can doubt yourself, but I never doubt my qualities. Today is a good example of having belief - believing what you can do on the pitch, and believing that one day it's going to be you that is going to help your team.

"When the game was open, in the last 20-30 minutes, that's when we had more space. Will [Alves], Isaak [Davies], Rubin [Colwill] and me caused them some more problems.

"There are eight games left, and we keep going as a team. The belief has always been there, because we've got enough quality. But as I said, the quality is not enough - we need to have that fighting mentality as well.

"Sometimes you can be better than the opponent, but the opponent still wins; not because they've got more ability, but more fighting spirit. So there are two sides of the game that we need to bring into the games, I think.

"That's why I say that if you go with quality and you go with that fighting mentality, as we just did, fighting for each other today, coming to a tough place, you can do it together.

"I think everyone is important in the squad. As I've said, I'm one of them that it's been difficult for, but at the end today, I'm happy. We just keep going as a team, and let's see what can happen at the end of the season."
