McGuinness post-Newport County | There's plenty of competition for places

Following Tuesday evening's pre-season meeting with Newport County, City defender Mark McGuinness spoke to Cardiff City TV.

Featuring throughout the second half against the Exiles, the centre-back played a key role in the heart of the City defence, helping the Bluebirds to keep a clean sheet and come away with a 2-0 victory in Leckwith.

"It's good to be back in the swing of things," began Mark. "Along with the new lads coming in, it's been good to get those minutes in.

"With the lads that we've got in the squad, we've got good depth in every position, so there's healthy competition for every place.

"All of the boys are settling in nicely. It's a good group with a mix of senior and younger players. You can see out there that everyone is bonding and we're playing some good football.

"This Irish skin isn't used to this hot weather! It's an added bonus I think for pre-season, to get the fitness levels up so that we're ready to rock going into the first game of the season."
