Match Report | Sheffield Wednesday 1-1 Cardiff City

Match Reports
City drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024.

Interim manager Omer Riza made two changes to the side that faced Blackburn Rovers before the international break with Callum Robinson and Yakou Méïté replacing Chris Willock and Anwar El Ghazi.

City had an early scare when former Bluebird Ike Ugbo hit the net inside thirty seconds, but thankfully the offside flag was up. The home side took the game to City in the opening 30 minutes with Josh Windass also going close. The Bluebirds' best chance in the first half hour came when Rubin Colwill played in Ollie Tanner, but his low strike was pushed away.

It was that man Tanner though that opened the scoring after 34 minutes. Callum O'Dowda excellently won the ball high up the pitch, and played in fellow Republic of Ireland international Callum Robinson. Robbo's shot was saved initially by Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle, but Tanner was on hand to tap in the rebound.

The advantage was short lived though, with the Owls scoring a tap in of their own two minutes later. Di'Shon Bernard was in the right place at the right time.

The second half was scrappy with chances at a premium. Colwill's dangerous free-kick caused Beadle trouble after 74 minutes, but Dimi Goutas was unable to send the rebound towards goal. Wednesday's Windass had earlier his a powerful drive from distance, but he failed to hit the target.

The poor weather conditions continued to impact the fixture as it went on. Both teams kept battling though in the hope of finding a winner. Tanner, who scored from close range in the first half, tried his luck from distance after 78 minutes. He struck wide on this occasion though.

Wednesday substitution Anthony Musaba hit one from outside the box with three minutes of the 90 left. Jak Alnwick denied him with a fine stop.

Six minutes were added with the game still level. Despite both sides showing urgency to get the ball forward and create chances, it stayed that way. City and Wednesday forced to settle for a point each from a tough encounter.
