Omer Riza made two changes to the side that defeated Derby County last time out with Anwar El Ghazi and Callum O’Dowda entering the starting XI.
The home side started strongly at Elland Road and took the lead after six minutes. Dan James used his pace to get in behind and found Brenden Aaronson free in the area, and he fired in at close range.
City's job got even tougher as the Whites added to their advantage on 13 minutes. James again the architect, supplying for Manor Solomon on this occasion, who tapped in.
It was Daniel Farke's side who controlled the flow of the game in the opening half, limiting the Bluebirds to a single shot on target. El Ghazi showed his skill in beating two defenders, but his shot from 25-yards was held by Illan Meslier.
The hosts added a third goal after the break, with James getting on the scoresheet at close range six minutes into the half.
Alex Robertson went close to reducing the deficit with 55 minutes gone. His curling strike was plucked from the top corner by Meslier. The Bluebirds looked to their bench moments after this chance with Joel Bagan and Yousef Salech introduced for Jesper Daland and El Ghazi.
Any hope City had of a three-goal comeback reminiscent of the 2019 squad at Elland Road was taken away by Leeds' fourth goal. Joel Piroe scoring from the penalty spot.
