City suffered a 5-0 defeat to burnley at turf moor on saturday, august 17th, 2024.
City boss Erol Bulut made two changes to the team that began the season against Sunderland with Wilfried Kanga and Yakou Méïté replacing Ollie Tanner and Callum Robinson.
The Bluebirds began strongly against their recently relegated counterparts but a mix up after nine minutes gave the hosts an advantage. Ethan Horvath got his footing wrong when aiming to control a back pass from Dimi Goutas, with the ball crossing the line.
Bulut's men refused to let their heads drop after the setback though and pushed for a leveller. They were inches away from getting one five minutes after the Burnley opener. Kanga, Joe Ralls and Méïté combined, with City's no.19 seeing his strike bounce out off the inside of the post, with it somehow drifting wide.
The Bluebirds did have the ball in the net after 22 minutes through Kanga, but the offside flag went up.
Typically, after all the City pressure, it was the home side that found the second goal. Luca Koleosho lashed home powerfully just after the half hour mark to give his team a strong advantage.
Another knock back for the Bluebirds came not soon after the second goal, with skipper Ralls forced to depart after a knock. Rubin Colwill replaced him. City continued pushing forward though, but they were unable to reduce the deficit before the half-time whistle went.
City opened the second half looking for a way back into the game, but they were punished for pushing forward. Josh Brownhill found a way behind the away defence and finished in a composed manner.
Callum O'Dowda saw a header saved on the hour mark, while Bulut introduced Joel Bagan and Malachi Fagan-Walcott to help change the flow of the game.
Perry Ng unleashed a powerful strike that was tipped away after 70 minutes, but the Bluebirds were limited to few shots by their powerful hosts.
Callum Robinson & Ollie Tanner joined Bagan and Fagan-Walcott in being welcomed into the action in the second half.
The Bluebirds pushed for a consolation, but were again hit hard by the Clarets to finish the game. Substitute Zeki Amdouni's strike from 30-yards bounced over the line via the crossbar.
And, in stoppage time, with Aaron Ramsey down injured, Scott Parker's side continued to push forward and added a fifth, with Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson firing home.
City are next in action on Sunday, 25th August, in the South Wales derby.
