Match Preview | Sheffield Wednesday vs. Cardiff City
The Bluebirds travel to Hillsborough to take on Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday afternoon.
The fixture will take place on November 23rd, with a kick off time of 12:30pm.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | IN THE DUGOUT
Sheffield Wednesday’s manager is Danny Röhl, who was appointed back in October 2023.
Röhl had a short playing career, representing lower league teams in Germany before stepping into coaching.
The German boss began his coaching journey as an analyst at RB Leipzig, after retiring as a player, working his way all the way up to assistant manager in under four years.
The 35-year-old continued to work his way up in the football world having stints as assistant manager at Southampton, Bayern Munich and the German National Team, before getting his first managerial role at Sheffield Wednesday just over a year ago.
Last season, Röhl took over with the Owls seven points from safety and without a win in 10 games, the German orchestrated an impressive turnaround keeping Wednesday up by three points.
Since taking over, he has won 24 games, drawn nine and lost 24, with a win percentage of 42.11%.
OPPOSITION FOCUS | SEASON SO FAR
Our hosts this Saturday head into the contest currently sitting 15th in the Sky Bet Championship.
Röhl’s side have struggled defensively at home this season, conceding 13 times in eight games, the second worst home defensive record in the Championship.
Before the international break, Wednesday had won two out of their previous six meetings, including an impressive 2-0 victory over Norwich City, thanks to two first half goals from Josh Windass and Dominic Iorfa.
Last time out, the Owls were defeated in the Steel City Derby to bitter rivals Sheffield United. A 50th minute goal from Tyrese Campbell was enough to secure all three points and the bragging rights for the Blades.
STATZONE | CITY’S RECORD
This Saturday will the 76th meeting in history between the Bluebirds and the Owls.
Of those clashes, the honours are even, with both sides winning 29 times while 18 have ended in a draw.
The first ever meeting was back in December 1920, where City came out 1-0 winners away from home. A week later in the reverse fixture, the Bluebirds made it two wins from two, defeating Wednesday 1-0 at home.
The last time the Bluebirds visited Hillsborough in the league, City defeated the Owls 2-1 back in December 2023. A goal from loanee Karlan Grant and a last-minute own goal completed a dramatic comeback.
CLUB CONNECTION | CALLUM PATERSON
Callum Paterson made the move to the Welsh capital at the start of the 2017/18 season, Neil Warnock originally brought the Scot in as an attacking full back before moving him into midfield and eventually up front.
Paterson was a key part of the 2017/18 promotion side under Warnock scoring 10 and assisting five in 32 games. He went on to net four times in the Premier League and Bluebirds fans will remember the passion with which he played with and his energetic celebrations.
He departed the Club in 2020, joining our hosts Sheffield Wednesday. Since signing for the Owls, Paterson has gone on to make 165 appearances in Yorkshire, netting 25 times.
