Opposition focus | In the dugout
In charge of the Royals is former Southampton boss Rubén Sellés.
The Spaniard was appointed as manager of Reading on June 26th, 2023.
Since then, his record includes 21 wins from 55 matches, a win percentage of 38.18%.
Sellés now enters his second season in League One with Reading and has won three out of four of the club’s pre-season matches so far, with victories over Watford, Woking and most recently, Queens Park Rangers.
Opposition focus | Last season
The 2023/24 campaign saw the Royals finish in 17th place in League One, with a total of 53 points.
From their 46 matches, the side won 16 of those, drew 11 and lost 19 games.
In the FA Cup, Reading impressed as they overcame Championship side Watford and earned a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United in the fourth round, in which they valiantly fell to a 3-1 defeat.
Opposition focus | Key player
Attacking midfielder Lewis Wing is a charismatic offensive player in the middle of the park for Reading and holder of the club’s Player of the Season award.
A fantastic first season saw Wing record 22 goal contributions, with eleven goals and eleven assists in all competitions.
He is an experienced EFL player who has had spells at clubs including Wycombe Wanderers, Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough.
Additionally, Wing is no stranger to scoring impressive goals, as he received five Goal of the Season nominations last season.
Club Connections | Bluebirds and Royals
Midweek's fixture could see two Bluebirds face their former club.
City duo Andy Rinomhota and Yakou Méïté both made the move to the Welsh capital from the Royals.
The Bluebirds have had success from signing players from Reading, none more so than centre-back Sean Morrison.
Representing the Club between 2014 and 2023, Morrison was a fantastic servant, playing a key part in promotion in 2018.
Another to recently feature for both clubs is Junior Hoilett, who had a stellar spell for City between 2016 and 2021.
The winger joined Reading following his time with the Bluebirds, going on to make 61 league appearances for the Royals.
