Valerien Ismael
OPPOSITION FOCUS | IN THE DUGOUT

Blackburn Rovers' manager is Valérien Ismaël, who was appointed last month.

Ismaël first stepped into coaching in 2009, joining Hannover 96 as assistant boss. By 2010, he had been promoted to manager of Hannover 96 II. He stayed in the role for just over three years when he moved to VFL Wolfsburg II.

After a year at the side, he left to pursue a new role as head coach at 1. FC Nürnberg. He left just a few months later with a record of eight losses in thirteen matches.

The French boss returned to VFL Wolfsburg where he took over again as manager of the second team before taking charge of the First Team the following season.

The former defender then had spells in charge of Greek side Apollon Smyrnis and Austrian outfit LASK before taking his first role in English football at Barnsley in 2020.

He took the Tykes to the Play-Offs in his first season in charge, but was unable to achieve promotion.

Following Barnsley's Play-Off defeat, Ismaël joined fellow Championship side West Bromwich Albion but was dismissed later the same season.

The 49-year-old joined Beşiktaş a month later before returning to England to take over at Watford.

Ismaël spent just under a year at the Hornets and was dismissed following a run of one win in ten league games.

Since taking over at Blackburn Rovers, last month he has taken charge of three matches, drawing one and losing the other two.

In midweek, the side fell to a 1-0 defeat to Stoke City, with Ali Al-Hamadi netting the only goal.

Joe Mason scores for Cardiff City
CITY FLASHBACK | CITY SCORE THREE TO BOOST PROMOTION HOPES

The Bluebirds welcomed Blackburn Rovers to Cardiff City Stadium in April 2013 looking to further their promotion prospects.

City took the lead late in the first half through Fraizer Campbell who found space at the back post to head home and give the Bluebirds the advantage.

Maintaing a 1-0 lead until the 86th minute, Joe Mason doubled City’s lead with a clinical strike.

Peter Whittingham put the game to bed when he stepped up and calmly slotted his penalty home.

City would go onto achieve promotion to the Premier League at the end of an incredible campaign.

Andreas Weimann
OPPOSITION FOCUS | KEY PLAYER

Rovers' standout performer this campaign has been Andreas Weimann.
