Neil Harris held a virtual pre-match press conference ahead of Tuesday's home clash with Barnsley.
The Bluebirds return to CCS for the first of two consecutive matches in the Welsh capital prior to the November international break.
City host the Tykes live on Cardiff City TV before Friday evening's Severnside Derby, and Harris explained that his squad need to find consistency in their performances ahead of two important fixtures.
"At the start of the season, we've not been consistent enough and that's the bottom line," he said.
"You can talk about the short turnaround, the amount of games we've had compared to everyone else in a short space of time, players that we've had missing. They're all valid reasons, but we should have had a better start than we have and I'm the first to admit that.
"I expect better performances, consistent performances over a 90-minute period and certainly results to improve because of that."
Having reflected on the Bluebirds' weekend defeat at QPR, the City boss called for his men to bounce back immediately in Tuesday evening's match.
"I spoke to the players, we reviewed the game and spent a lot of time on the video analysis of it," he said.
"Taking a few things that were wrong, we've hopefully put them right. Ultimately, you only do that on the pitch though and that's what we want to do on Tuesday night against Barnsley."
