Pencaerau pupils learn the power of hard work and healthy living from Joel Bagan and Isaak Davies
Pencaerau Primary School gave Joel Bagan and Isaak Davies a warm Bluebirds welcome as they dove into a Premier League Primary Stars session and Q&A on resilience, hard work and how to stay healthy.
They joined in football drills, connected with the learners and shared advice on achieving their goals. To wrap up the visit, they signed special matchday programmes as a Christmas treat, thanking the learners for their hard work throughout the year and their important role in Community Foundation Day 2024.
Premier League Primary Stars is the Premier League's primary school education programme, using the appeal of football to support children to be active and develop essential life skills. It is available to every primary school in England and Wales, with over 19,000 schools engaged with the programme. More than 1.3million school sessions and events have already been delivered.
Funded by the Premier League through the Premier League Charitable Fund, the programme has enabled over 68,000 teachers to use resources for English, PSHE, PE and Maths, to help children to be active and develop essential life skills. There are 650+ free resources available.
Currently 104 professional football club charities from the National League to the Premier League run in-classroom Premier League Primary Stars sessions in local schools, with over 18m attendances by primary school pupils.
Alex’s road to opportunity at Cardiff City FC Community Foundation
From low attendance and no GCSEs to excelling on his BTEC Level 3, Alex's confidence has soared with personalised support and regular Futsal.
Traditional school settings did not appeal to Alex. In high school, he struggled with motivation to attend class and complete his work, resulting in a lack of routine. But the Foundation’s blended learning approach broke this cycle. The further education provision helped Alex develop his skills on the court while receiving tailored academic support in the classroom.
Futsal is used as an engagement tool for learners like Alex, encouraging physical activity while providing a platform for students to express themselves beyond the classroom. Futsal is an exciting, fast-paced small-sided football match. The game places a large emphasis on technical skill-and-ability in situations of high pressure.
Alex is now halfway through his BTEC Level 3 qualification, which is equivalent to three A-levels. During this time, he has secured part-time employment with Cardiff City Football Club at the official SuperStore. This was a major milestone for Alex, as he initially lacked the confidence to pursue these opportunities.
