City History | Craig Conway's title-winning strike at Burnley

History
A fixture between Burnley and Cardiff City at Turf Moor will bring back fond memories for many a Bluebird

With promotion already achieved, the April 2013 clash saw City secure the title with a 1-1 draw.

On the scoresheet for the Bluebirds that day was Scottish winger Craig Conway, who recalled his fond memories of a special day in our history.

"That season, promotion was obviously the main aim, but going into that game, we had worked really hard and had been top for a while, so we were really keen on winning the league and doing it in style," Craig began.

"Although we would have liked to have won the game, they equalised in the last minute, we managed to achieve the title, which was the icing on the cake and getting the winners’ medal was brilliant."

Conway was a regular fixture for the Bluebirds in the title-winning campaign and made a huge contribution.

His goal at Turf Moor remains highly regarded over a decade on, as his first half strike was enough to clinch top spot.

Craig continued: “I just remember Ben Turner played a long ball into Kim Bo-kyung, who found me and I managed to take a good first touch. The only thing on my mind was to have a shot.

"As I’ve cut inside, the far corner just opened up for me and I’ve just placed it. It was a great feeling to score ultimately the goal that won us the league, it was amazing. The importance of the goal made it even better."

On a memorable day for the Bluebirds, another positive was the fantastic support from the away end, along with the celebrations that followed.

“The Cardiff City fans are always great," Craig added. "They travel in numbers and that season was no different, they were brilliant, not just that day, but all season, they were right behind us.

"One of the best feelings as a footballer is that elation of scoring a goal and you see all the fans and your teammates running over, it was amazing. At the end, having clinched the league, it was great scenes that I’ll always remember.

“It’s right up there with the best moments of my career. We were such a close bunch of mates and we mixed both inside and outside of football. That was really important and a key part of why we were so successful.

“I remember the celebrations that we had after in Cardiff, we saw how much it meant to the people of the city. To be a part of it was so special."
