City Flashback - 2007 | Ledley inspires comeback vs Preston

History
It’s FA Cup action up next for the Bluebirds, as we welcome Preston North End to Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Ahead of facing the Lilywhites, we take a look back at a memorable goal that secured victory at Deepdale back in December 2007.

Dave Jones’ side went into the Championship fixture in positive form, having secured wins over Colchester United, Blackpool and Sheffield United.

In front of 12,046 fans, including a strong away following, the Bluebirds fell behind early on, as Lewis Neal’s corner found Simon Whaley, who struck low past Kasper Schmeichel to give Alan Irvine’s men the lead.

After a frustrating first half for City, midfielder Joe Ledley stepped with a fantastic performance after the break, playing a key part in the Bluebirds turning the game on its head.

The former Wales international put in an excellent corner-kick delivery for defender Roger Johnson to power home a header to equalise.

Ledley then found space with a shrewd interchange with Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, beating Lilywhites defender Sean St Ledger in the box to fire City into the lead.

With a remarkable second-half comeback led by Ledley, the Bluebirds secured the first win at Deepdale since 1986.

Fittingly, the 2007/08 season is renowned for Jones’ side’s performance in the FA Cup, securing a place in the Final at Wembley.

Victories over Chasetown and Hereford United were followed up by wins over Wolverhampton Wanderers and Middlesbrough.

With Barnsley the opponents in the Semi Final, Ledley stepped up once more, scoring a fantastic volley to send City into the FA Cup Final.

In front of a record crowd of 89,874, Jones’ men narrowly fell at the final hurdle, succumbing to a 1-0 loss to a talented Portsmouth side, with striker Nwankwo Kanu netting the winning goal.

As we welcome Preston to CCS this weekend, Ledley’s goal against the Lilywhites in 2007 played a part in a truly memorable season for the Bluebirds.
