Alnwick post-QPR | It shows the spirit in the team
Jak Alnwick spoke to the press after Cardiff City’s 2-1 victory away at Queens Park Rangers.
“We put some good foundations in last year, and we said this year that we really want to kick on, especially now we’re at the halfway point of the season,” Jak began.
“Coming here, we knew they weren’t in the best of form, but they have a new manager, and we knew it was going to be tough, but winning games like this goes a long way and are sometimes better than just passing teams off the field. It was scrappy, but we got there.
“We knew that we were going to create chances. In the first half we gave them nothing, and in the second half their goalkeeper has made a few brilliant saves, but we always knew we were going to get a goal in the end.
"It shows the spirit in the team. You saw it against Sheffield Wednesday, we have a lot of grit about us. We can come to places and dig in as well as playing our football.
“With the squad that we’ve got, we’ve shown we can go away and take it to the biggest teams in the league. We got a draw at Leeds, got beaten by Leicester in the last minute, but we’ve shown we can compete. We’re in a good place, and if we put together a good run, we can be right up there, so we just have to keep going.”
Alnwick was forced to make a remarkable save at the death to keep the Bluebirds ahead, but the shot stopper says that it’s all just part of his job.
“It’s what I’m there to do! I’ve said it all along and I said it when I signed my contract, if I can make big saves in big games, then that’s what I want to do.
“It was scrappy. It got flicked on, I got blocked on the line, so I had to claw it out. I don’t want to have to do it because I want us to go and win games by two or three goals, but if I have to make big saves every now and then, then that’s what I’ll do.”
The 30-year-old was also full of admiration for match winner Perry Ng, who netted his fourth goal of the campaign to seal victory.
“I’d say Perry is one of the best right backs in the league, he’s just that good. He does little things that a lot of people don’t see, especially if we’re under a little bit of pressure and the ball goes out to him, and he shows his calmness and composure on the ball.
"He can give a little bump to players off the ball to let the ball go out of play, just those kinds of little things. He’s a top player and we can always rely on him.”
