Neil Harris’ side welcome the Bluebirds following the Lions’ 1-0 defeat against Rochdale in their Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round replay on Wednesday evening.
What to expect from the Lions…
Currently sitting 14th in the Sky Bet Championship table, Millwall have had a solid campaign following their promotion from League One last season. Having not lost in the league since New Year’s Day, the Lions are currently on a five-game unbeaten run, with their most recent league victory coming in a 2-0 win away at Reading.
A somewhat surprise name leads the goal-scoring charts for the Lions this season. Midfielder George Saville has managed seven goals in 24 appearances since he made his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers permanent in the summer, following a loan spell in 2015.
Striker Lee Gregory is another standout player in the Millwall ranks with six goals thus far – including netting the second in that win over Reading last weekend. The 29 year-old signed for Millwall in 2014, working his way up from non-league representing the likes of Harrogate Town and FC Halifax Town.
The Lions re-signed 38-year-old club legend Tim Cahill during the Januray window, and the Australian international made a scoring return for the club's U23 side this week.
In the hot seat…
Harris has been with Millwall since hanging up his boots in 2013. Starting out with the U21s, the 40 year-old had a stint as caretaker boss during the 2013/14 season, before being appointed permanently in 2015.
Plying his trade as a striker in his playing days, Harris had a loan spell with the Bluebirds in 2004. Signing from the Lions, he made three appearances and scored once during his spell in the Welsh capital.
Previous meetings…
The Bluebirds have played out two successive stalemates with the Lions at Cardiff City Stadium. Our last meeting at The Den came back in September 2014, when Millwall won 1-0 courtesy of Dan Shittu's goal.
Prior to that, City were unbeaten in eight games against Millwall, stretching back to 2005.
City’s last win over Friday’s opponents came at Cardiff City Stadium in 2012, as an 8th minute Rudy Gestede strike was enough to secure the three points.
The Bluebirds did claim the double in that season too, two goals in two minutes courtesy of Peter Whittingham and Craig Noone saw City triumph on that occasion.
Club connections…
Current Bluebird Liam Feeney had a three-year spell with the Lions between 2011 and 2014, scoring five goals in 73 appearances.
As mentioned, Neil Harris also represented both clubs along with players including Darren Purse, Scott Malone, David Forde and Andy Keogh.
