ABERFAN: A TRIBUTE
Community
21st October
Fifty years ago today, October 21st 1966, the small South Wales village of Aberfan in the Merthyr Vale was devastated.
An avalanche of coal waste crashed into Pant Glas Junior School and nearby houses on that fateful day, killing 144 people – 116 of them children.
Ahead of Wednesday evening's kick-off, a minute’s silence was held in memory of those who lost their lives. Players of Cardiff City Football Club and Sheffield Wednesday Football Club wore black armbands as a mark of respect.
The game was dedicated to a generation lost – and the courage and determination of the Aberfan survivors.
Throughout this day, and always, we remember.
To those we love and miss so very much
