The Bluebirds looked to test Reading ‘keeper Adam Federici early on, as Craig Conway and Joe Mason fired in efforts which the Australian international kept out within the first minute.
However, as the Royals looked to break through Jimmy Kébé, Peter Whittingham intercepted his run and let fly from thirty-five yards in one movement.
Whitts’ lofted effort sailed over Federici and into the top corner – putting it among the best of countless memorable goals scored by City’s number seven over the years (click here for our montage of his Football League strikes).
The Bluebirds looked to have secured the three points at the Madejski Stadium in the seventieth minute, as Whitts turned from scorer to provider.
This time, he delivered a pinpoint free-kick at the near post for Mark Hudson to get a crucial touch and divert it home.
Reading did pull one back as Jimmy Kébé headed in from a corner with thirteen minutes remaining. The Bluebirds held on for victory though, maintaining their fourth-place position in a year in which they’d qualify for a Play-Off spot, and reach the League Cup Final at Wembley.
