PRE-SEASON BUILD-UP l CITY IN GERMANY

City are in Germany from July 20th. Join the Bluebirds and recreate some history...

Cardiff City embark on an eight day tour of Germany later this month, taking in pre-season friendly fixtures against RW Ahlen, VFl Bochum, FC St. Pauli and VFl Osnabrück(CLICK HERE FOR FULL TOUR DETAILS).

Indeed, it will be the second time that City encounter VFl Osnabrück having done so way back in 1961 at Ninian Park!

And, as part of a five-piece online feature leading up to the tour, we’ll be looking back at that game and many more encounters that have taken place between present day and our first encounter with German opponents on May 14th, 1924…

FROM HAMBURG TO BERLIN (well, the other way around…)

Our upcoming pre-season matches in Germany will renew links with clubs in that country that date back to May 1924 - ninety-two years ago.

In that month, we embarked on a European tour of Czechoslovakia (as it was then known), Austria and Germany, playing five matches. The final two of those were against German opponents Borussia Berlin on May 14th and HSV Hamburg on May 18th (Sparta Prague twice [L2-3 & W3-2] and First Vienna [W2-0] being opponents in the other games).

City won the Berlin match 2-0 at the German side’s Olympia Motor-Cycle Stadium with goals from Jack Nock and Jack Nicholls. Four days later we drew 2-2 with Hamburg, Jack Nock and Jimmy Jones our scorers on that occasion.

Sixty-four years later we would meet HSV Hamburg again in two memorable, competitive matches. More on that one later in the series…
