U21 | CITY VS HUDDERSFIELD
Club News
16th April
Cardiff City's U21 development side face a tough test on Monday afternoon, visiting PDL2 North leaders Huddersfield Town with an 11 game unbeaten run to maintain and a end-of-season play-off spot in their sights.
Kevin Nicholson's men have two games remaining in the league season, currently sitting in second spot in PDL2 South after defeating both Hull City and Watford last week.
Their opponents, Huddersfield Town, have already secured the PDL2 North title and a spot in the play-offs - more about the Professional Development League 2 set-up can be read below.
The young Bluebirds will be looking to in-form forward Rhys Healey in attack, with the striker having netted four times in his last three games. While in defence, City have managed to keep six clean sheets during an eleven match unbeaten streak that stretches back until the opening game of 2016.
This match with Huddersfield, set to take place at the John Smith's Stadium, will kick-off at 1pm with live updates available via our U21 Twitter feed - @CardiffCityDVP. Cardiff City Player HD will also have highlights from Yorkshire in the days following the match.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE TWO: THE PLAY-OFF SITUATION
Should the Bluebirds secure their spot in the U21 PDL2 play-offs, it will be the third time in four seasons that Cardiff City’s U21 team have achieved this feat since the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP) was introduced in 2012.
The PL U21 Professional Development League 2 has been split into two separate divisions since its inception - North and South. The top two teams in each league face off at the end of each season in a play-off format, crowning an overall Professional Development League 2 Champion. In 2014/15, an additional set of games was introduced to the league structure, with Northern and Southern teams playing against each other once during the regular season in a hope to add more important game time to the schedules of the young professionals involved.
With this in mind, the Bluebirds travel to Northern leaders Huddersfield Town on Monday afternoon - 1pm kick-off, while their nearest rivals Millwall face off against Sheffield Wednesday (2pm), who prop up the 11 teams in the Northern section.
Nicholson’s men will finish their regular campaign with a home match at Cardiff City Stadium against Crystal Palace on Monday, 25th April, 7pm kick-off. The Lions will have already completed their seasonal fixtures on the same day, hosting Mark Kennedy’s Ipswich Town at 1pm. The U21 side that does finish second in Professional Development League 2 South will compete against Huddersfield Town in the first semi-final, while PDL2 South winners Charlton Athletic will play Sheffield United or Hull City - the Blades currently holding a nine point lead over the Tigers, who have three games left to play.
