Match Previews

CARDIFF CITY v HULL CITY
Venue: Cardiff City Stadium
Date: Tuesday 15th September 2015, 7:45pm K.O.

The Bluebirds play their first home evening league fixture of the 2015/16 campaign, taking on Hull City at Cardiff City Stadium.

THE OPPOSITION

Steve Bruce’s Tigers are back in the Sky Bet Championship after their Premier League relegation last time out, and will be hoping to compete for a return to the top flight at the first time of asking. They have made a strong start to this campaign, with a 100% record at the KC Stadium so far.

The Humberside outfit have been less assured on their travels though, recording a draw away to Wolves and defeats to Charlton Athletic and Brighton. Nevertheless, the Bluebirds should expect a difficult test, as the Tigers’ squad is still brimming with Premier League quality.

While their back five includes Allan McGregor, Curtis Davies and Michael Dawson, Bruce can choose from the likes of Mohamed Diamé, Tom Huddlestone and Shaun Maloney in midfield. They are strong up top, having supplemented the talent of Abel Hernández and Sone Aluko with the signing of Adama Diomande, and Arsenal’s Chuba Akpom on loan.

CLUB CONNECTIONS

One player to have starred for both the Bluebirds and the Tigers in recent years is Fraizer Campbell. The forward, now at Crystal Palace, scored fifteen goals in thirty-four games to help fire Hull City to the top flight for the first time in their history in 2007/08.

He had a similar impact upon his arrival in the Welsh capital in January 2013 – this time helping the Bluebirds up to the top flight with seven goals in just twelve matches, before netting a further nine League and Cup strikes in our season in the Premier League.

Another player to pull on both shirts in recent years is Seyi Olofinjana. The Nigeria international joined City on loan from Hull for the 2010/11 campaign, making forty-two appearances in the Bluebirds’ engine room as we reached the Play-Off Semi-Finals.

MEMORABLE MEETING

Hull City 2-2 Cardiff City - KC Stadium
Championship, 4th May 2013

Cardiff and Hull played out a dramatic afternoon of football on the final day of the 2012/13 season as City travelled to the KC Stadium.

The Bluebirds had already secured their promotion away to Burnley two matches earlier, but the home side needed a win to avoid relying on other results to go their way.

The drama began from the offset as former Tiger, Fraizer Campbell, raced on to Kim Bo-Kyung superb pass to slot the Bluebirds ahead. Hull then fought back, with Nick Proschwitz and Paul McShane turning the game around.

Then, after Andrew Taylor had been dismissed, the Tigers were awarded a 94th minute penalty. Incredibly, with fans staging a premature pitch invasion, David Marshall saved Proschwitz’s spot-kick and the Bluebirds counter attacked to earn one of their own, which was duly converted by Nicky Maynard.

In the end, both sets of fans went home happy, as Watford’s home slip-up against Leeds meant that Hull were promoted to the Premier League alongside the Bluebirds.
