With the Bluebirds now ten games into the 2015/16 season and the second international break now upon us, here’s a quick look at those topping the individual statistics charts in Russell Slade’s squad.
GOALS
Leading the way in the goal-scoring charts for Russell Slade’s side is the re-invigorated, Joe Mason.
The twenty-four year old striker, now in his fifth season with the Bluebirds, bagged his most recent of strikes at Brighton & Hove Albion on the weekend. He has, unsurprisingly, registered more shots on target than any other Bluebird this season – fourteen in total at this stage.
Only four players in the Sky Bet Championship have scored more than Joe thus far, with Reading’s Nick Blackman leading the way with seven strikes. Kenwyne Jones and Sean Morrison are his nearest City challengers, with two in the League apiece.
Joe’s best season to date came during the 2011/12 campaign, during which he scored twelve times – including these beauties…
ASSISTS
No surprises here. Peter Whittingham sits second in the Championship for number assists to date (four), with only Birmingham City’s Clayton Donaldson above him (with five). Add to the four assists his goal in the 2-1 defeat at Rotherham and it’s already shaping up to be another productive season for City’s longest-serving player.
Anthony Pilkington, Scott Malone and Sammy Ameobi each have two assists each – but the smart money is always on City’s PW7 to top these charts as he has done consistently during the past decade. Digest some of these classic Whitts moments…
APPEARANCES
It’s twelve out of twelve for the Bluebirds’ regular centre-half pairing of Sean Morrison and Matt Connolly. Morrison’s two goals – against QPR and Charlton – may have seen him take more of the headlines, though Connolly must surely take equal credit for some stand-out defensive displays.
Now in his fourth season as a Cardiff City player, Matt’s story of promotion-success is well-fabled. Playing in his more-favoured central position under Russell Slade, the Barnet-born defender is proving his worth as one of the best readers of the game at this level – not to mention an inspirational presence in the spine of this City team.
Here’s what Matt had to say in a recent edition of 'In The City'...
DISCIPLINE
Nobody wants to see red or yellow cards banded about too often – but without the tenacity and aggression in a side that often leads to such instances, few sides can bank on success too readily.
One man who has cemented his status as a fan-favourite this season is in the video above - Fábio Da Silva. Since coming into the side against Wolves back at the tail end of August, the spirited Brazilian full-back has picked up countless ‘Man of the Match’ awards, but a few yellow cards along the way!
Indeed, his latest at Brighton on the weekend means he’ll miss our next away trip to Preston, having now accumulated a total of five yellows in League and Cup competition this term. But fear not...Fábs will be back!
