MATCH PREVIEW: AFC BOURNEMOUTH vs CARDIFF CITY
Match Previews
31st July
AFC Bournemouth vs Cardiff City
Venue: Vitality Stadium
Date: Friday 31st July, 2015, 7:45pm kick-off
The Bluebirds take on Premier League opposition for the second time in a week, this time travelling to face Bournemouth in our final pre-season fixture.
THE OPPOSITION
There’s no question that AFC Bournemouth were the standout side in the 2014/15 Championship season. Eddie Howe’s men rose to the summit of the table with their quick-paced, attacking game and kept it up over the whole campaign to take the title ahead of Watford on the final day.
The Cherries were the division’s top scorers as winger Matt Ritchie had a starring role in their attacking success. He played a part in 32 goals with fifteen strikes of his own and a whopping seventeen assists. Yann Kermorgant, Brett Pitman and Callum Wilson, who is fresh from signing a new deal at the Club, also found the net consistently, while Marc Pugh and Harry Arter gained plenty of plaudits behind them.
Howe has publicly backed his players to make the step up to the Premier League, but he has also bolstered his ranks with several key signings. Two defenders at the opposite ends of their careers, the highly-rated former Ipswich full-back Tyrone Mings and veteran centre-half Sylvain Distin, will supplement the Cherries’ back line. Meanwhile, Josh King and Christian Atsu, who have joined from Blackburn and Chelsea respectively, will be given license to show their pace on the counter-attack.
CLUB CONNECTIONS
Of course, Kenwyne Jones spent time on loan with the Cherries last season, most notably scoring a crucial late equaliser against Ipswich Town to help them on their way to the title.
However, you may not have known that two other members of City’s current line-up have also turned out for this evening’s opposition. After coming through the Arsenal academy, Matthew Connolly went on loan to Bournemouth as a fresh-faced nineteen-year-old. He played a total of seven matches there and scored his first professional goal in a 2-0 away victory over Nottingham Forest.
Four years later Scott Malone was to pull on the Cherries’ kit too, as he joined on an original six-month loan from his first side, Wolves. He impressed so much that he was signed up on a three-and-a-half year contract, before being poached by Millwall the following summer.
MEMORABLE MEETING
14th October 2004, Carling Cup 3rd Round
Result: AFC Bournemouth 3-3 Cardiff City AET (Cardiff City win 5-4 on penalties) – Fitness First Stadium, Attendance: 8,598
Those present at the Fitness First Stadium in the autumn of 2004 were treated to a classic, as Cardiff City edged past Bournemouth on penalties following a 3-3 draw in Dorset.
James Hayter had put the Cherries ahead on eight minutes. However, goals from Alan Lee and Lee Bullock looked to have put the Bluebirds into the next round, until Hayter stepped up again in the 90th minute to take the match to extra time.
In the extra period, Cameron Jerome, who had come on as a late replacement for Peter Thorne, netted for the Bluebirds, only for the Cherries to equalise at the death once more when Wales international Brian Stock hit home. Thankfully for City, despite Graham Kavanagh’s saved spot-kick, they still scraped through as James Collins, Lee Bullock, Byron Anthony, Alan Lee and Chris Barker all hit the back of the net.
AFC Bournemouth: Moss, Young, Howe, Maher, Broadhurst, Spicer, Elliott, O'Connor, Stock, Hayter, Fletcher. Subs: Browning, Holmes, Connell, Stewart, Coutts.
Cardiff City: Alexander, Weston, Vidmar, Collins, Barker, Bullock, Kavanagh, Bullock, Ledley, Thorne, Lee. Subs: Warner, Gabbidon, Anthony, Parry, Jerome.
