History

DANNY MALLOY (1930-2015)

at the age of 84.thCardiff City Football Club were saddened to learn of the passing of our former captain Danny Malloy, who died at his home in Scotland on January 13

Denny-born Danny joined us from Dundee on December 8th 1955 for a then-large fee of £17,000. He had begun his senior professional career with Dundee in 1950 after joining them from Camelon Juniors. A dominant central defender, he was to make 242 League and Cup appearances for us, and succeeded Trevor Ford as captain during the 1956/57 season.

We were relegated from Division One that season, but Danny led us to promotion in 1959/60. He left to become player/manager of Doncaster Rovers at the end of 1960/61 and ended his career with Clyde. Danny had played for the Scottish League representative team whilst with Dundee, and after joining Cardiff City played for Scotland B against England B in February 1956 at Dundee.

He always retained an affection for Cardiff City and made a special journey from his Scottish home at the age of 79 to be present at the final League match to be played at Ninian Park in April 2009 before our move to our new home.

We offer our sincere condolences to Danny’s family.
