Ole Gunnar Solskjær was full of praise for Capital One Cup ‘City skipper Aron Gunnarsson and his fellow senior professionals on Wednesday night, as the Bluebirds, including a number of younger players navigated their way through to the second round with a win over Coventry City.
“The senior pro’s were terrific, coming into it and leading the younger boys along, especially the skipper Aron, who I thought was fantastic today,” Ole said. “We gave some young players a chance and others a chance and I'm very pleased overall with their performance.
"At this point of the season, we need to give the players match-time, and at this moment everyone needs games. We could have taken some of the lads off earlier, but we didn't have the game secure.”
Continuing his thoughts on the match itself, Ole added, “We wanted to play at a hight tempo and move the ball about, which is something we did well, creating a number of chances in the first half, by which time we probably should have ha two or three.
“In the second half we perhaps took our foot of the pedal, letting them back into the game. We stopped passing it forward and should have been doing that more. Sometimes football can hurt you if you don’t take your chances, but luckily we had a good goal. It was a great piece of skill around the side from Mats and Kadeem was there, though I think it was an own goal. I thought we dominated and controlled the game and when you get the second you think it's game over. But we stopped playing through them, and they got their reward with the next goal.”
Ole was also pleased for summer addition Guido Burgstaller as the Austrian notched his first competitive goal for Cardiff City, with the manager simply saying, “Any player that comes into a new club will want to show they can put on good performances and a goal helps. He’s going to be a top, top player for us.”
It’s Port Vale next for City in the Capital One Cup, with Solskjær happy for the chance to give squad members additional game time, saying, “The (second round) draw is what it was - and it gives a number of the lads another opportunity to get a game. I was hoping for Man Utd of course, but it was a good draw.”
