FLITCROFT: A POINT AND MOMENTUM
David Flitcroft was in a buoyant mood following Barnsley’s last gasp equaliser at Cardiff City Stadium. With the busy schedule at the end of the season Flitcroft was certainly complimentary about his team’s efforts against what he believes will be the league Champions.
“I think it was more than just a point tonight,” he said. “To come here after the ‘Palace game and for the game to have been fit in after the Easter week, it’s been tough. It was asking a lot from this group of players, I knew before the game that I was. To see them go ninety-seven minutes against the champions elect, you cannot ask any more. We leave here with more than a point, we leave here with momentum.”
The Tykes’ manager was in good spirits about remaining in the Championship for another season, and believes there is a real belief within the club.
“The whole football club has got behind us from day one and that unification will definitely force us forward,” he said. “We have real momentum going into the last five games. We had some real impetus. We threw three subs on, we went really offensive and pushed our full backs on.
“The players are bouncing because they knew how important the Charlton game is to us. It has given us a lift and buoyancy. They want to beat the best teams and compete with the best teams in the league and we are going to just keep over achieving. This group of players just don’t know average.”
Flitcroft also joked about Defender Bobby Hassell’s desire to find an equaliser late on, saying, “At times Bobby was playing behind the striker which worried me, but we went for the throat because we had to. In them situations you never know what is going to happen. It was the slowest goal I have ever seen. I can’t believe that it took that long to get over the line but it did and it was brilliant. There is no doubt we earned that point tonight.”
