Alan Pardew said he was disappointed with his Newcastle side's performance in their 4-1 defeat on Saturday.
"I wasn't very happy with our display in the first half, our attitude and application went out the window, for a strange reason really I can't really put my finger on it," said the Magpies boss.
"Obviously we have a few big hitters missing. it was an opportunity for people today and it wasn't taken unfortunately. But we will gather ourselves, second half was a lot better and we should have won the second half, we had a couple of great chances.
"On reflection Cardiff were a different proposition for us today, we have played a lot of European games and this was our first real British game and we got found out in the first half.
"At some points as a manager you have to accept that the dynamics of the first half caught us out, and I think with some of our big hitters not being here while playing against a highly motivated and good side who I think have a great chance of winning the Championship. I thought that before the game and I certainly think that after."
